Shay Esposito | Series No.1 ‘How Does It Feel’

By CA Marshall I had my review written last night right after I heard the new single ‘How Does It Feel’ by Canadian Pop Electronic Singer/Songwriter Shay Esposito. All that I needed to do was add the video to this review…and then I watched it this morning shortly after its launch. I scrapped what I wrote after watching. It simply couldn’t do it justice. Here’s exactly what I wrote on her music page after viewing it: ‘I’m bawling my eyes out over here. I’m speechless! It’s perfect! I can’t wait to post the review! Shay Esposito I love you for this!’ Why? Today, December 13th, 2016, Shay launched her new single and video for ‘How Does It Feel’, a song that focuses on overcoming addictions and the struggles therein. I can honestly say that albeit Shay remains consistent in bringing a strong message to her loyal fans, her lyrical ability has matured into a lilting, sweet, sincere tone that is carried out perfectly in the production of this single. The video is a beautiful kaleidoscope of imagination genuinely reflecting the darkness and light that accompanies addictions. She walks barefoot, cloaked in darkness, seemingly lost through a wintry cold forest searching for something, when she comes across a window with light reflecting through and realizes the search is for herself. This video and song perfectly reflects the struggle many people with addictions face and it is well executed. Allow me to go off the beaten trail of the typical Music Journalist write […]

Dan Davidson Series No.3 The ‘Barn Burner’

By CA Marshall There is no doubt in my mind that Canadian born Singer/Songwriter Dan Davidson is going to go for the gold with his Country music career. In fact, this is his Starlight Music Chronicles ‘Spotlight’ Series No. 3 (see No. 1 by Randy Wayne Belt of Barley Station, and No. 3) and we see no end in sight as we follow his road to success. Since June 2015, when his debut single (as a solo Country Artist) ‘Unkiss Her’ launched until this moment, Davidson has impressed us with every single he’s released and his fan base grew exponentially when he launched ‘Found’ earlier this year. In fact, many people I played the song for instantly recognized the highly contagious song asking me ‘Who sings that?!’ to which I happily reply, ‘Why it’s Dan Davidson, of course’. Of course! With the release of his latest song ‘Barn Burner’ on October 25th, and the video launch today, there’s no doubt in our mind that the name ‘Dan Davidson’ will be on the lips of every Country music lover internationally. This is a song that is just as highly contagious as ‘Found’. Co-written with The Road Hammers’ Clayton Bellamy, the lyrics talk about the great ‘Small Town’ hoedown – a group of friends looking for a good time and that’s just where the song takes you. The beat is pure Canadian Country at it’s best: catchy, quick, and fun. Davidson’s vocals have always been iconic: there’s no mistaking them as soon […]

Palaye Royale Series No. 4 | Boom Boom Room

By CA Marshall Photography: Chris Belsito | Vibrant Lifescapes LA Fashion week Video & Photos by Stephanie Rachel “Yesterday Palaye Royale finished just a little bit over a 12-month cycle of living on the road. We have played 225 shows, played a show in every state (besides the Dakotas, Hawaii, & Alaska), drove close to 100,000 miles, blew 2 transmissions, hugged at least 15,000 fans, made some friends and lost some friends. A year of experiences lead to stories that will forever be imbedded into my mind, heart and soul. I am grateful for the Palaye Royale team and family of the Soldiers of the Royal Council – without everyone’s love and respect for us we could not sustain a career of playing music everyday in a new city. Safe to say I am proud and happy, so thank you for being apart of year one. Now currently driving back to Los Angeles from Detroit – will take a week to collect my sanity or completely lose it then, back into the studio to make album two, Boom Room: Side B. Early 2017 Palaye Royale joins Andy Black and William Control on a North American tour to continue another year of caravanning.” The above quote was written by Sebastian Danzig, Guitarist of the Los Angeles based Fashion Art Rock Band Palaye Royale on November 16, 2016. Indeed, it goes without saying that true fans of Palaye Royale would know this band has been insanely busy since launching their album ‘Boom […]

Lia Cole | One To Watch

by CA Marshall Editor | Starlight Music Chronicles Photos submitted by: PlanIt Sound for Lia Cole Occasionally, I will discover a ‘golden nugget’ in my social media newsfeed, and in late summer this year, that came in the form of Edmonton, Alberta-based recording Artist Lia Cole. For me to say that this is one of the best new discoveries locally ranks high for our Starlight Music Chronicles ‘Spotlight’ platform and miss Cole has just what it takes to rank among some of the music industries notably talented peers; her vocal and lyrical ability is second to none. So, let’s have a look at the connection here…. In the summer of 2013, I met the dynamic husband and wife team Rowena and R.J. Cui of PlanIt Sound Inc., an Edmonton-based Branding/Artist Development/Event Coordination company who can accredit the Juno Awards Show in Edmonton to their impressive roster. It is the same company that backs Cole and the progression of her career as an Independent Artist in Canada. Knowing this already tells me that miss Cole has what it takes being that the PlanIt Sound team invests their time in quality Artists and the product they deliver has always been a result of this. I know, I have been privy to many events they have hosted with their Artists and it’s always magnificent! Cole’s new single ‘You Lost Me’ launched on October 18, 2016 and shortly after, we had a chance to catch up with this talented young lady in an exclusive […]

Olivia Penalva Series No.1

OFFICIAL Starlight Music Chronicles 2016 TEEN Artist of the Year: Olivia Penalva CA Marshall When the lilting and effervescent voice of British Columbia, Canadian, Olivia Penalva first reached my ears was win the fall of 2015 when Starlight Music Chronicles (SMC) sponsored a ReverbNation competition with Bongo Boy TV. I was one of the judges and out of thousands of entries, Olivia’s stood out at the top of my ‘YES’ list. Everything she presented in her submission for her single ‘Ferris Wheel’ was light, fun, audibly and visually magic to the senses: She simply had to be one of the winners. She did win, and was aired on Bongo Boy TV across 33+ cable network stations across the USA. In November of last year, Olivia entered the SMC Artist of the Month competition and after losing to The Roxy Suicide, she decided to take another stab at the January 2016 Artist of the Month competition and won! Soon after, she began launching new singles off her new EP ‘Weightless’ which launched recently and which has been receiving RAVE reviews globally. The songs are an ethereal digest of empathy, romance, and life with a storytelling that only Olivia could be capable of carrying out: her vocals are an elixir of all that is beautiful in this world to the ears with a touch of magic behind it. Seriously. One only has to listen to her debut single ‘Outshine the Stars’ to hear the lovely in this young Artists make-up. Olivia Penalva […]

Scott Patterson | GORDON

A force to be reckoned with GORDON debuts LIVE in West Virginia for Flood Relief by CA Marshall There’s a golden nugget waiting to be discovered in our Music Industry and it comes by the name of GORDON. I speak pretty strongly here when I make this claim so let me back up the bus a little and catch you all up to speed on what’s about to literally explode onto the music scene…… Since early June, 2016 when Los Angeles, California-based world renowned actor Scott Patterson tweeted out ‘The band prepping first two gigs! More info to come! #rockandroll #LAdebut #lovethemusic #RideTheBull’. As Editor of an established Music and Entertainment Website and online Magazine (Starlight Music Chronicles), my antennae immediately went up – this needed to be researched more….. We are always on the lookout for new music and are happy to promote Indie Artists so this definitely had me subscribing to his Twitter account and following his tweets. I wanted to know more, see more, hear more….Here and there and up until this very moment while I am typing this feature, I would see snippets of what was to come. ‘In the Studio Recording’ was one. Then there were some video clips of the band at rehearsals followed by the Band Logo revealed on July 9th which read simply “GORDON (With a backwards `R`)  and the initials ‘R B S P T I D’” attached to the message: “July 29 Tractor Bar, Mt. Nebo, WV! 9-11pm. Flood Benefit. […]

Meghan Patrick

By CA Marshall I am not quite sure where the ‘Meghan Patrick train’ came from but to say ‘out of nowhere’ would be a lie….this young Canadian Country Recording Artist, signed with Warner Music Canada (record label), has been on my radar since she rose to the challenge earlier this year with her version of the Children’s song by Televisions’ ‘Sharon, Lois, and Bram’ titled ‘Skinnamarink’.  I know, I know…..perhaps it should have been the very recent release of her album ‘Grace & Grit’ that would have caught my attention as a music Journalist, (and make no mistake, it did!) however, it was a little more personal of a connection being that Patrick is also friends with Country recording artist Dan Davidson (See our previous Spotlight features I & II on our Spotlight numbered series). Davidson has been a much admired industry peer who has not only made an impact in the Country music community as of late, but also with this brilliant young Artist who has made a significant enough impression even on the Canadian Country Music Association (CCMA) with an honorable consideration for Album of the Year, Songwriter(s) of the year (Meghan & Chad Kroeger), Video of the Year (Bow Chicka Wow Wow), and Video Director of the Year (Emma Higgins – Bow Chicka Wow Wow) for fall of 2016. Considering Patrick only signed with Warner in the summer of 2015, this is a huge accomplishment! All of this, among her Warner peers Aaron Goodvin, Brett Kissel, and […]

The Standstills

By CA Marshall One of the newest bands on our Radar are Toronto, Ontario based The Standstills, a band that has been definitely making a mark on the Canadian Indie Music Scene with their recent recognition as the 2016 Canada’s Best New Radio Charted Rock Group- Winners. In addition to this accomplishment, they have been blacking a trail across the country with the release of their song ‘Orleans’ last fall which lead them straight into the top 10 spot for a 10 week period on the Canadian Radio Scene. May 11th, 2016 the band announced the much anticipated ‘Rise Of The Fall’ video off ‘The Devils Porch’ album will be ‘coming soon’ causing a flurry of shares on social media and sending radio stations into high gear spinning the song non-stop. Recently, we had an interview with the band to talk about their climb to success, summer festival ‘Grizfest’ in Tumbler Ridge, BC later this summer, and all things related to ‘The Devils Porch ‘album. -Interview May 2, 2016- SMC – Hello and welcome to Starlight Music Chronicles! Renee – Thank you for having us! SMC – We found out about you via the Grizfest Music Festival in Tumbler Ridge, BC. We hear you are going to be performing there. Renee – Yeah, Cool! SMC – So let’s just start out with a little bit about your new album ‘The Devils Porch’ and the reception you have gotten from media. I do see that there are quite a few radio […]

Dan Davidson Series No.2

By CA Marshall It has been almost a year since our last Spotlight on Edmonton, Alberta, Canada Country Recording Artist Dan Davidson (See Series No.1 here) and in that time he has been making significant strides in the industry with the release of his recent single ‘Found’. Radio stations across the country have been clamoring to get a copy of the song to spin on their stations and it is not hard to figure out why: the song is completely addicting (see below & have a listen).  You hear it once and you need to hear it again. It has lead the Musician to the Calgary Stampede Stage performing live with industry peers Matt Blais Band, Jordan McIntosh, Matt Masters, Aaron Pollock, and George Canyon. However, this is definitely not this very well rounded and talented Musicians’ first ‘Rodeo’: he was asked to perform at Big Valley Jamboree last summer (2015) literally moments after his launch as a Solo Artist. In addition to his growing status on the Country Music scene, Davidson continues to work with his band  Tupelo Honey as well as Local Recording Artists such as Bryan Finlay, Lexi Strate, Rachel Woznow, Janay Thomas, and now ‘one to watch’, Kayla Patrick. We connected with Davidson earlier this month for an Exclusive Interview where we talked about his progress since July of last year and this is how it all went down: *Exclusive Interview* SMC – It’s been some time since we have had a one on one Dan! The Fontaines Series No.1

By CA Marshall Photos courtesy of: Hank Fontaine This feature has been strategically a long time in the making. California based (referred to as ‘New-Wop’ band – but we shall get into that later….) ‘The Fontaines’ have been on the Starlight Music Chronicles (SMC) radar since being introduced to their music genius in our December 2015 Artist of the Month competition and I felt that there was no better time than the present to showcase the Brother and Sister duo (Hank and Charlotte) than the present: Spring. Here’s why: The first song I ever listened to by the band that had me at hello was ‘Paul Newman’, which automatically had me envisioning a retro soda shop with couples doing the swing by the jukebox. It was fresh, hip, happening and extremely addictive: everything ‘Spring Fever’ represents. For a lover of fifties/sixties retro tunes this was right up my alley and to be completely honest, there are only two other bands that I have spent more than two consecutive days researching and they are Palaye Royale and New Mayans and here I found myself completely immersed in everything ‘The Fontaines’ for the two day minimum. After listening and observing, I had a sneaking hunch that I was just scratching the surface of ‘The Fontaines’ and it wasn’t until after my interview with Hank that I discovered that this band is on an even deeper level than I had first been impressed upon. Much to my excitement (and original instinct), I am […]

NEW MAYANS: ‘CRIMES’ EP | Review

By CA Marshall Photos courtesy of NEW MAYANS Management by Victoria Sanders Photography I think I have found my new ‘Bowie’. Now hold on, hold on, HOLD ON! Before all you avid Bowie lovers get up in arms and think I am replacing our beloved ‘BlackStar’ please hear me out: I am and always will be a loyal Bowie fan. But truly, I have stumbled upon something *NEW* here and I feel confident in my initial statement…… Back in 2014, St. Louis, Missouri-born, Chicago based,  ‘Swiggy’ (aka: Joe ‘Swiggy’ Swigunski) began collaborating with several notable Industry Professionals who were ‘key’ throughout David Bowies career. They are: New York Grammy Award winning Music Producer Mario J Mcnulty, Earl Stick, and Sterling Campbell, featured in the recording of the new four song EP ‘Crimes‘ at The Magic Shop studio in SoHo where Bowie recorded his last album ‘Blackstar’. Mcnulty is not only known for his work with Bowie, but also is the mastermind behind Artists such as Prince, Julian Lennon, and Tony Visconti to name a few. In addition, Swiggy also collaborated with famous drummer Sterling Campbell, (who was also Bowies Drummer) who has worked with Duran Duran, B-52’s, Soul Asylum and Cyndi Lauper. The cherry on the cake was in the addition of Earl Slick (who also worked with Bowie, John Lennon, Yoko Ono, and Robert Smith). All were included in the production of Swiggy’s newly released (today!) EP. Voila! In addition to support from the above notable ‘Bowie Camp’ professionals,  […]

Jamie Lawson

Jamie Lawson Self Titled Album: From Warner Music Canada AVAILABLE OCT 16 “I first became aware of Jamie Lawson a few years ago, after hearing his track “Wasn’t Expecting That”. I very rarely get emotional over a track, but that song stopped me dead. He manages to put across such raw emotion within his work, and I knew immediately that I wanted to work with this guy in some way. Having decided to start my own label ‘Gingerbread Man Records’ with my label Atlantic Records, the first artist I had to sign was Jamie. Starting Gingerbread Man Records means I can put music I love out there on a huge platform, and Jamie seemed like the perfect choice for my first release” – Ed Sheeran, July 2015. The road to overnight success is often far longer than people assume, but for Jamie Lawson, the journey was an epic one. It took time for him to find his voice, and even longer to hone his songs, which recreate a key moment, an emotion or even a whole lifetime in sparse, poetic language that connects in a very direct and powerful way. And though he quickly found a core, loyal following who have sustained him throughout, only now is that starting to blossom into something far bigger. But music this lovely is worth waiting for. Growing up in Plymouth, Jamie was introduced to music by his older brothers. Early on, he’d go to school singing lyrics by The Smiths and The Housemartins […]

Katie Belle Akin

by Randy Wayne Belt (aka: Barley Station) There’s no question that Katie Belle is someone with passionate songwriting vision. She knows how to bring the song right home and make you feel what she is feeling as if you were there listening in her own backyard in the U.S. state of Georgia. The song “Georgia Moon”, will potently make you drift off and make time stand still as you feel you are watching the world disappear just as in the lyrics: “All time stands still when your with me here – I’ll watch the world disappear – with you – under a Georgia Moon.” That part of the song will be stuck in your head forever, as well as the powerful lyric: “and the stars align when our hearts collide – in the clouds feels so right – with you – under a Georgia Moon.” (To Hear it and buy it on iTunes click Here)   And a full version early take is here: (To Hear Georgia Moon Click Here) The song will draw you in by its pure passionate believability. It is, in fact, about a direct experience, in the form of a much hoped for date/romance that ended up not coming to pass. But we’ll find out more about that in the interview. When you hear it, there will be no question that the artists truest emotions went into the writing and production of the song. “Georgia Moon” gives you a down home country feel as well, and stays relatively […]

Melody Lovejoy

by Randy Wayne Belt (of Barley Station) I always love when I come across a true artist in every sense of the word. And I had a good hunch I was right because you won’t find many female country artists with such colorful hair, and large beautiful handmade earrings. And they look great on Edmonton, Alberta recording artist Melody Lovejoy. And she could well be a trendsetter here because her EP “Letting Go”, released in fall of 2014, has already received airplay in Canada, Japan, and the Netherlands. Melody can best be summed up by her song “Barefoot In the Backwoods” where you will find country music smoothly blended with the roots of rock and a very powerful impassioned vocal delivery. You’ll feel like you are “chasing butterflies and dreaming and running with the wind” right along with her. The same moving passion for singing is felt in an incredible way when you hear Melody’s moving duet with Sawyer Brown member, Shayne Hill. The lyric in this song, “I can almost feel the rhythm of our souls” is rendered even more effective by the sibling-like blend of vocals the two brought to the song. With lyrics like these, I am definitely on the right track in my quest for another true artist. The closing track “Letting Go” delivers another powerful punch in the gut to all the false promises of love by the insincere. The carefully placed banjo blended with solid rock guitar parts makes one think of music by artists […]

Mickey Loves Mallory

By Xristopher Bland If inspiration characteristically comes like a cloudburst, Toronto’s Mickey Loves Mallory managed two incredible things in their newly released song “Flash Flood.” In figuratively flipping their umbrella upward to capture and funnel the raindrops, as it were, they created a song so immediately affecting yet elusive of genre that labels of “alternative” and “electronic” seem oversimplifications of the ineffable place from which music comes, and to which “Flash Flood” speaks. As well, in listening to that place through inspiration and rendering the rain honestly, band members Dani Jean and Brandon DeLyzer experienced the fundamental trustworthiness of inspiration, however it comes. They initially weren’t sure whether their management company would like the song, the pair explained while chatting at a downtown restaurant close to the Gardiner condo where they record. As different as the song sounded, they also understood the often-precarious ground between pushing musical boundaries and alienating listener accessibility. Yet they moved ahead truthfully to the sound of the creative rain. Beginning off the beat before flowing into the ambience of a dark rhythmic pulse, the song includes a jaggedness wrought by a hole cut in a speaker (a technique used by John Lennon for the raw guitar sound in “Revolution”). Above it all, Dani Jean vocally flows to Brandon’s lyrics like a stratosphere of emotion, echoing the haunting interplay of trance vocals by Sara McLachlan on the 1999 Delerium track “Silence.” In other places, glimmers of Grace Jones appear, and where the reaction of “This […]

Dan Davidson Series No.1

Like a bull riding event at a rodeo, Tupelo Honey frontman, Dan Davidson, comes charging out of the gate with his first solo effort riding hard and hitting the ground running with the highly contagious and energetic first single “Unkiss Her” due to be released on July 13th, 2015 on iTunes. (see below for album art)   ‘and then all of a sudden I was booked to play for 10,000 people at Big Valley Jamboree!’ -Dan Davidson by Randy Wayne Belt “Unkiss Her” is a fun, energetic, and upbeat song that will grab your ears right away. With it’s highly memorable song melodies and ear grabbing guitar riffs, you will walk away smiling after hearing this song just once – and you’ll be addicted after hearing it twice! I caught up to Dan Davidson recently on the phone and interrupted his pleasant bike ride to chat with him about his new single, its lyrics video, and what his musical plans are ahead. I found Dan to be an easy to talk to kind of guy with a good sense of purpose coupled with a good sense of humor. Being a recording artist and songwriter myself I wanted to get right down to the nitty gritty so the first thing I just HAD to ask about was the song lyrics. That’s what intrigued me about the song. So I figured I’ll just skip all the typical interview formality questions for a minute and get right to the heart of the matter: Randy […]
