SMITHRADIO | FEB 2017 AOM Winner!

Scott Patterson | SMITHRADIO February 2017 By Candice Anne Marshall If any of the Starlight Music Chronicles followers on Twitter were paying attention from January 15th to 22nd, they would have noticed a flurry of activity. This was the seven-day period that will go down in our history books as the Artist of the Month fan voted competition that broke some serious records in terms of ‘fan votes’. It was the first time ever that a band (fan nominated) would achieve the highest ever votes for the social media poll posted.  In fact, SMITHRADIO fans were relentless in their pursuit of  making music history by elevating their favorite Musician, Scott Patterson and his band, to this level of   success by crushing the previous record for number of votes held by The Roxy Suicide in December 2015. Recently. I connected with Scott to talk about the February 2017 Artist of the Month win, his fans (who have now labelled themselves the SMITHRADIO Army), and what that means for the upcoming Artist of the Year competition in June 2017. Here’s what he had to say: – INTERVIEW – SMC – So tell me, what are your thoughts on winning SMC’s February 2017 Artist of the Month (AOM) competition? SP – Well, it’s a terrific honor to get this kind of validation so early in the game. I didn’t expect to get a nomination, was surprised when we got it and was even more surprised we won. Kinda pinching myself on this one, […]

Andrea Nixon Series No.1

By CA Marshall Spotlight Interview | Andrea Nixon August 25th 2016 ‘Diary Of A Housewife’ Photography by: Candice Anne Graphics & Photography *Note: Full photo spread will appear when the Artists’ album is released in November 2016   SMC – Hello Andrea! We feel blessed to have been a part of your musical journey with your upcoming Album, ‘Diary Of A Housewife’. Can you first familiarize our readers with you: tell us a little about your background in music, where you’re from, and how your upcoming album relates to all of this…. Andrea – Hi Candice. So glad to have you on the team! I began singing as a child as a way to connect my love of words to my love of music. Even as a young girl, I had a heart for country music, singing songs like “ The Greatest Man I Never Knew” by Reba McEntire as a ten year old and loving the depth of it and the insight it offered into the human experience. I also began to write poems at age 8 and continued to do so into my adult years. Nine years ago, after the birth of my daughter I began singing in public with my husband encouragement. Singing for a living was a dream I tucked away at the tender age of 11, after my father’s passing. He was my biggest cheerleader and doing it without it seemed impossible. While dabbling in live performance at the Second Cup open stage, I began […]

Luke Potter Series No. 1

Interview by CA Marshall Artist: Luke Potter  SMC – Luke it’s always an honor to do an interview with you! How have things been? Catch us up to speed… Luke – Well it’s been lots of writing and recording. There are so many songs ready to go and I’m pretty psyched about them. I did get a holiday in Tenerife too, which was amazing! SMC – Let’s get right into it: your new single ‘All The Same‘ sounds like something new for you. It has a really upbeat hip hop sound – what were your influences when you wrote it? Luke – I wrote it with Marcus and Hjalmar, my great friends from Stockholm who I’d already worked with on ‘Storms’ and ‘Ready Or Not’. We composed and produced ‘All The Same’ in my little home studio in Weston-Super-Mare. It originally started off as just as a groove influenced a bit by Twenty One Pilots. We all thought it was awesome and started crafting the melody and the lyrics. I think the song is about living your life and breaking out of the everyday rules that society gives you. It’s a bit tongue in cheek too and, I hope it’ll make people smile and want to dance as there’s so much serious stuff going on in the world at the moment. We went on to write and record 3 songs during their visit and my next single, ‘Something More’ which will be out early September, is one of them. Oh […]

(IAM)WARFACE Series No.1

OFFICIAL Starlight Music Chronicles 2016 Artists of the Year: (IAM)WARFACE By CA Marshall (IAM)WARFACE is a British Based band who has literally stormed the Starlight Music Chronicles (SMC) scene in the last 12 months: first as our September 2015 Artist of the Month winners, and then once again winning the title as SMC’s 2016 Artist of the Year in the Adult category. What an amazing ride it has been also! Here, for the first time, we are launching their debut among many other prestigious industry peers on the Spotlight. Make no mistake, this is a band who has been truly making themselves known though their astounding visual presence (The classic ‘Warface’ make-up that lead vocalist, Matt Warneford wears for photo shoots and live shows), Exquisite vocals and instrumentation that is ‘Depeche Mode’ worthy with just a touch of Punk Rock finesse (They refer to their genre as Dirty, Avant-Garde Electro Rock), and a social media connection with their fans that is almost unheard of these days: they refuse to have anyone run their social media – fan connection is very important to them. This is where we originally connected, and it was their song and video ‘You Don’t Love Me’ which tipped the scales: they NEEDED to be in my Artist of the Month competition. I had a good feeling they would sin too! I was right, and in September 2015 they were crowned September 2015 Starlight Music Chronicles Official Artists of the Month. We collaborated on quite a few […]

The Fontaines Series No.2

by CA Marshall Bing! I get this message the other day in my inbox and upon checking, I see that Hank Fontaine, one half of the dynamic ‘du-wop’ duo, The Fontaines, from Los Angeles, California, is inquiring about whether or not I have heard their new album yet. (of COURSE I have, they are The Fontaines!) ‘Do you think you will do a review?’ he asked. I smile to myself and respond, ‘Don’t worry dear, I was already on it!’ It would be amiss if I weren’t to follow up the epic ‘numbered series’ we have posted on several of our top Indie Artists over the last year and The Fontaines have certainly earned this spot simply, well, by being The Fontaines. Sounds like a pretty confident statement doesn’t it? But it isn’t just the hard work (back to back albums have been recorded!) this quartet band impresses upon us (Hank & Charlotte Fontaine – brother and sister, accompanied with Daniel Zuker on bass, and Chrystian Kaplan on drums), it is the fact that the sound on their new four song EP ‘ii’ (released June 24th, 2016) is demonstration of both epic vocal ability (Charlotte can certainly belt out those lovely gravelly-yet-delicate chords!), and instrumentation that is guaranteed to lighten the heart, brighten the mood, and put a soulful swing in your step all while bringing a serious ‘new’ sound to our ears. Based on the last interview I had with Hank (see here – The Fontaines Series No.1) where it was indicated that the ‘new […]

Gianluca John Attanasio

By CA Marshall Exclusive Starlight Music Chronicles Spotlight Interview – May 15th, 2016 SMC  – Hello Gianluca! Welcome to the Spotlight on Starlight Music Chronicles! We often showcase many high profile industry (Music, Film, and Fashion) profiles on this platform and look forward to adding you to this elite roster. How did you first hear about Starlight Music Chronicles (SMC)? GJA – It’s all because of my press office who informed me about Starlight Music Chronicles later I’ve read several sections of that and I’ve immediately fell in love with the magazine. SMC – So let’s first delve into a little bit of your history….tell us a little bit about how you came to be ‘Gianluca John Attanasio’ GJA – I’ve been playing acoustic piano since I was 8 and started writing my early songs at the age of 13; Later I attended -and often won- several musical contests in Italy and France. At the end I was lucky enough to sign my first contract with an Italian label. Subsequently I’ve collaborated with American people, writing music for dance, theatre and independent cinema. SMC – That SOUND! I have always been an avid listener of anything to do with the Doors and that languid, dark, unmistakable sound coming from Jim Morrison. How did you first discover this was a sound you could easily replicate? GJA – I consider The Doors an unrepeatable and incomparable band. If few of my songs have some similarities to theirs, it’s because I’ve always appreciated the […]

Ari Herstand

By CA Marshall Editor | Starlight Music Chronicles Recent Interview previously posted on Indie Music Bus Q – Hello Ari! Thank you for taking the time for this interview for the Indie Music Bus and Starlight Music Chronicles Spotlight platforms. Let’s start at the beginning with your music career. I had a glimpse into your ‘style’ and I have to say it is really unique with the combo of looping, trumpet, keyboard….you are very multi faceted. For first time readers finding out about you via this interview will want to know how you came about with your musical journey….. Ari – My very first shows around the University of Minnesota campus were with my dorm roommate at the time who was a cellist, my floor RA, who was a beat boxer and the girl down the hall who was a singer. This was my initial “band.” We performed a bunch of shows around town like this, but they moved away or moved on and when I performed solo I missed the bigger sound we created. I had seen looping done by someone at an open mic where he looped a 12 bar blues or something and soloed on top of it, so I knew the technology existed. I went to the music store one day and asked if they had something like that. They showed me the Boss RC 20XL loop station (this was 2005). I locked myself in my room for a month and learned it. I remember my […]

Meghan Patrick

By CA Marshall I am not quite sure where the ‘Meghan Patrick train’ came from but to say ‘out of nowhere’ would be a lie….this young Canadian Country Recording Artist, signed with Warner Music Canada (record label), has been on my radar since she rose to the challenge earlier this year with her version of the Children’s song by Televisions’ ‘Sharon, Lois, and Bram’ titled ‘Skinnamarink’.  I know, I know…..perhaps it should have been the very recent release of her album ‘Grace & Grit’ that would have caught my attention as a music Journalist, (and make no mistake, it did!) however, it was a little more personal of a connection being that Patrick is also friends with Country recording artist Dan Davidson (See our previous Spotlight features I & II on our Spotlight numbered series). Davidson has been a much admired industry peer who has not only made an impact in the Country music community as of late, but also with this brilliant young Artist who has made a significant enough impression even on the Canadian Country Music Association (CCMA) with an honorable consideration for Album of the Year, Songwriter(s) of the year (Meghan & Chad Kroeger), Video of the Year (Bow Chicka Wow Wow), and Video Director of the Year (Emma Higgins – Bow Chicka Wow Wow) for fall of 2016. Considering Patrick only signed with Warner in the summer of 2015, this is a huge accomplishment! All of this, among her Warner peers Aaron Goodvin, Brett Kissel, and […]

Dan Davidson Series No.2

By CA Marshall It has been almost a year since our last Spotlight on Edmonton, Alberta, Canada Country Recording Artist Dan Davidson (See Series No.1 here) and in that time he has been making significant strides in the industry with the release of his recent single ‘Found’. Radio stations across the country have been clamoring to get a copy of the song to spin on their stations and it is not hard to figure out why: the song is completely addicting (see below & have a listen).  You hear it once and you need to hear it again. It has lead the Musician to the Calgary Stampede Stage performing live with industry peers Matt Blais Band, Jordan McIntosh, Matt Masters, Aaron Pollock, and George Canyon. However, this is definitely not this very well rounded and talented Musicians’ first ‘Rodeo’: he was asked to perform at Big Valley Jamboree last summer (2015) literally moments after his launch as a Solo Artist. In addition to his growing status on the Country Music scene, Davidson continues to work with his band  Tupelo Honey as well as Local Recording Artists such as Bryan Finlay, Lexi Strate, Rachel Woznow, Janay Thomas, and now ‘one to watch’, Kayla Patrick. We connected with Davidson earlier this month for an Exclusive Interview where we talked about his progress since July of last year and this is how it all went down: *Exclusive Interview* SMC – It’s been some time since we have had a one on one Dan! Last […]

Melany Rowe: Designer

By CA Marshall Photos Courtesy of Melany Rowe “I can make you a fancy coffee with all the beautiful toppings, but please don’t ask me to make you a regular coffee, I would have to get you to make it yourself,” smiled Melany Rowe, Quebec-born Fashion Designer known for her flair of the dramatic and self-proclaimed lover of “all things Glamorous”. In fact, at her Debut Show at Western Canada Fashion Week (WCFW) in Edmonton, Alberta, in the spring of 2013 (where I first met her), the Designer came into the industry with a bang. All of her designs are polished, pretty, and above all: Glamorous. Intricate, hand-sewn beading, chains (yes! Chains!), detailed floral techniques, and feathers, adorn her Bridal & Evening gowns (and accessories!) that would make even Coco Chanel blush. _____________________ Fast forward to the Spring 2016 WCFW runway show for the Designers’ Fall/Winter 2016/17 collection and you can see how Rowe has clearly been evolving as a designer: her collection was one of her most edgy and glamorous yet. Models graced the stage wearing floor length gowns in black, white, cream, and pale pastel covered with intricate beading, delicate ribbon, chain, and pearls, chiffon, brocade, and lace all strategically placed for that elegant-yet-edgy flair notorious to this designer. Models graced the floor to the sounds of her current inspiration, Recording Artists Palaye Royale’s single ‘Morning Light’ thus incorporating the Designers’ desire to combining Glamour and Rock Music with a little bit of edge. ‘The band really has […]

NEW MAYANS: ‘CRIMES’ EP | Review

By CA Marshall Photos courtesy of NEW MAYANS Management by Victoria Sanders Photography I think I have found my new ‘Bowie’. Now hold on, hold on, HOLD ON! Before all you avid Bowie lovers get up in arms and think I am replacing our beloved ‘BlackStar’ please hear me out: I am and always will be a loyal Bowie fan. But truly, I have stumbled upon something *NEW* here and I feel confident in my initial statement…… Back in 2014, St. Louis, Missouri-born, Chicago based,  ‘Swiggy’ (aka: Joe ‘Swiggy’ Swigunski) began collaborating with several notable Industry Professionals who were ‘key’ throughout David Bowies career. They are: New York Grammy Award winning Music Producer Mario J Mcnulty, Earl Stick, and Sterling Campbell, featured in the recording of the new four song EP ‘Crimes‘ at The Magic Shop studio in SoHo where Bowie recorded his last album ‘Blackstar’. Mcnulty is not only known for his work with Bowie, but also is the mastermind behind Artists such as Prince, Julian Lennon, and Tony Visconti to name a few. In addition, Swiggy also collaborated with famous drummer Sterling Campbell, (who was also Bowies Drummer) who has worked with Duran Duran, B-52’s, Soul Asylum and Cyndi Lauper. The cherry on the cake was in the addition of Earl Slick (who also worked with Bowie, John Lennon, Yoko Ono, and Robert Smith). All were included in the production of Swiggy’s newly released (today!) EP. Voila! In addition to support from the above notable ‘Bowie Camp’ professionals,  […]

The Whiskey Darlings

Interview by CA Marshall Editor| Starlight Music Chronicles SMC – Hello The Whiskey Darlings! Welcome to Starlight Music Chronicles Spotlight! We first met via the December 2015 SMC Artist of the Month competition and are pretty impressed about you holding the top spot for the first part of the competition. What did you think of this competition? TWD – Hey Candice!  I think that is a great way to get people engaged in the process of picking the artist.  Because of it you have people excited for and wanting to read the reviews of the band, and listening to their music during and after the competition. SMC – What positive do you think you walked away with from the competition? TWD – We are a fairly new act, so it was nice to see some of our new fans rally behind us in that competition. SMC – For the sake of introducing you to our fan base, can you tell us all of your names and which instruments you play? TWD – The Whiskey Darlings consist of Michele Van Kleef singing and playing guitar, and Rob Rainwater singing and playing guitar, mandolin and harmonica. SMC – Can you please tell us about the band itself and how you all came to be The Whiskey Darlings? TWD – We started the project based on a love of Folk-Rock of the 60s and 70s. We were both booked at the same venue on the same night by mistake, so the person who […]

The Barbarellatones

by CA Marshall December 2015 will go down in the history books to wrap up yet another fabulous year for Starlight Music Chronicles (SMC). This included the launch of our new website as well as online Magazine. This also included the inception of the Artist of the Month (AOM) competition in July. Little did we know that this would lead to not only a winning Artist/Band monthly, but also new industry contacts, and friends to what we call: our Music Family at SMC. Part of this *New Music Family* is Robbie Quinn, vocalist for the band and we recently chatted with him about this unique band, their experience in the music industry as well as the AOM competition. Here’s the scoop: SMC -Hello Robbie! Let’s begin with a Musical timeline of events for the band so as to give our readers an idea of where the band has come from Robbie – The Barbarellatones are plain and simple a Glam Rock band. Trashy, sleaze-o-riffic…my big influences are Bowie, The Cramps and The Velvet Underground. My previous Glam/Gothabilly band was ‘Sex With Lurch’ and we had 3 drag queen go-go dancers/backup singers and it was very fun and also very dramatic! I am from Hollywood originally but now I live in Hawaii, partly for work. I fly to LA sometimes to play shows and I Record at a crappy little studio on the other side of the island but it’s a lot of fun for me…gotta keep the creative juices a-flowin’! […]

anoNYMous Raven

By CA Marshall   SMC – Hello James! We are so excited to have you as our newest Starlight Music Chronicles Spotlight Artist! For the purpose of this interview and for our readers, can you please give us your (Artist) Name, where you are based out of and exactly what Instruments you do play? Nym – I do pretty much all artistic activity under the name The Lady anoNYMous. Well, performance-related activity. I guess you can call it a stage name. I’m a native of the Pacific Northwest United States, having lived in California, Oregon, Washinton, and Alaska. But the past four year I’ve been living in a surburb of Kansas City, Missouri. I play pretty much any instrument I can get my hands on! But I’ve trained as a pianist and a proficient guitarist. For the purposes of composing, I use mainly electronic equipment. SMC – We are happy to see that you are proudly proclaiming your support for activism in the (genderqueer?) community. As you know, we work closely with Morgan’s Mission (www.morgansmission.ca) which is an organization built by the Dunbar Family who lost their child/twin sister to Suicide in June of 2014. Morgan’s mission also speaks out about other societal issues such as: cyber bullying, depression, mental health issues, AND PTSD. Do you feel that what you stand for is relatable to any of these subjects? Nym – Absolutely. A lot of my past work has been about transgender visibility and raising awareness about gender issues and […]

Arkavello

by CA Marshall It was not too long ago when we first began our Starlight Music Chronicles Artist of the Month competitions and Arkavello came in very close behind the August 2015 winner Olivia Rose with a whopping 481 votes and a very close victory. Since, the band has launched their new album ‘Songs From The Future’ and we have the scoop below! ________________ Alex Webster – Vocals and Bass John Hutchinson – Vocals and Guitar Riley Frank – Vocals and Drums SMC – Hello Arkavello! Wow! What a year for you all! We have listened (many times, we admit) to your first EP `Songs from the Future` and would love to know right off the bat the story behind each song – could you tell us a little about each one? Alex – The first song “Caught in a Fantasy” is an older song John and I wrote in October of 2013 before Arkavello became a full band; it was a turning point in our writing, as well as our own view on the world. It is about becoming aware that your reality isn’t what you have been told. John – “Here We Are” is about humanity coming to a cross roads, either we can choose the path of greed and power which will undoubtedly lead to oblivion or choose the path of peace and love. John – “Vanilla” is plea to a higher power to cleanse the world of all evil.   SMC – We were so happy to have […]

Jamie Lawson

Jamie Lawson Self Titled Album: From Warner Music Canada AVAILABLE OCT 16 “I first became aware of Jamie Lawson a few years ago, after hearing his track “Wasn’t Expecting That”. I very rarely get emotional over a track, but that song stopped me dead. He manages to put across such raw emotion within his work, and I knew immediately that I wanted to work with this guy in some way. Having decided to start my own label ‘Gingerbread Man Records’ with my label Atlantic Records, the first artist I had to sign was Jamie. Starting Gingerbread Man Records means I can put music I love out there on a huge platform, and Jamie seemed like the perfect choice for my first release” – Ed Sheeran, July 2015. The road to overnight success is often far longer than people assume, but for Jamie Lawson, the journey was an epic one. It took time for him to find his voice, and even longer to hone his songs, which recreate a key moment, an emotion or even a whole lifetime in sparse, poetic language that connects in a very direct and powerful way. And though he quickly found a core, loyal following who have sustained him throughout, only now is that starting to blossom into something far bigger. But music this lovely is worth waiting for. Growing up in Plymouth, Jamie was introduced to music by his older brothers. Early on, he’d go to school singing lyrics by The Smiths and The Housemartins […]

Palaye Royale Series No .2

By CA Marshall Editor | Starlight Music Chronicles When it comes to Canadian Born, Las Vegas based Fashion Art Rock Band Palaye Royale, it’s perfectly fine to name drop. And we’re not talking just the band as an entity, we are talking all of the Fashion and Entertainment Industry Professionals sitting up and taking a serious look at history being made here and wanting to be a part of it. Prominent Profiles such as Kellin Quinn (Frontman for the band Sleeping with Sirens) have begun talks of collaborations on music with the band as of late, The Agency Groups’ Ralph James (see note worthy below) has signed the band following their candid performance at Canadian Music Week in Toronto, Ontario, Canada earlier this spring, and Fashion Moniker John Varvatos has also demonstrated his support via fashion ensembles which have become the bands insignia: Fashion Art Rock Band. To be perfectly frank, their trail has cultivated from a ‘dwarf- sized’ star (haven’t they always been stars?) to a blazing comet across the universe and this is no short-term comet either, this one is for the history books.   But how can we be so confident in making this claim though? Proof is in the documented and historical timeline leading up to present day. I have personally written several articles on different Website platforms for Palaye Royale (now based out of Los Angeles, California) and have followed their journey quite closely since February of 2014 when they messaged me via Twitter to […]
